Anti-Imperialist League is established.

June 15, 1898

Originally the Anti-Imperialist Committee of Correspondence then the New England Anti-Imperialist League and finally a national organization, it is founded at a meeting attended by hundreds of people at Faneuil Hall. In its subsequent platform, the organization declares, “We hold that the policy known as imperialism is hostile to liberty and tends toward militarism, an evil from which it has been our glory to be free.” Former U.S. senator and Massachusetts governor George Boutwell is the first president.
